I am a big fan of sending and receiving postcards, the trashier the better, the most seaside, the most iconic and comic. A sketch on the back depicting a scenic landmark, plus a witty one-liner to sum up the trip, all add to the holiday experience - That you've been away.
My witty one-liner is 'Fear and Lothian in Edinburgh'. The fear refers to a deep-rooted fear of being trapped in small spaces. Planes, trains and automobiles all count. As a result my world has gotten smaller and the urge to expand again has grown increasingly strong. Through the patience and love of friends I can truly say that I've just had my first flight without a panic attack.
I am the person sitting next to you who turns and says - 'I'm having a moment would you mind having a chat to distract me'. In the main people get it and will chat away and this helps to dissipate the rising adrenaline. This time I deployed new strategies of breath control, counting, and internal story-telling. If all this sounds bonkers then you probably don't experience panic attacks. If you do then examine your toolkit and equip yourself with a self care kit.
