So what is happening at Kota
For the past 6 months I have been artist in residence. If you haven’t visited yet you’ll find this beautiful seafood restaurant overlooking the harbour in Porthleven- the most Southerly port in the UK. Headed up by Chef/owner Jude Kereama a New Zealander who has won awards for his restaurants in both London and Auckland before moving down to Cornwall. Chef Jude is half Maori, half Chinese Malay) he creates signature dishes with an Asian twist - visually spectacular and delicious.
Jude describes the artwork: “ I was absolutely thrilled to see what Max had produced for our first collaboration which was based on seafood we use in the restaurant. Each piece of art is measured for all the spaces on the walls and some are of giant show-stopping proportions that use every bit of space possible. I could not have been happier with the result”
We started the residency by looking at what’s in season. Fish is on the menu and now also on the walls. A walk down to the harbour you can pick a mackerel or two - freshly caught, they shine like the sea.
Collaborating with chef Jude Kereama has emphasised this interest in seasonality and what can be sourced locally. They are beautiful creatures and wonderful to draw. I paint them huge to emphasise their brilliance. Filling the restaurant with their vibrance.
